Harvest
is in full swing up here at the winery. We have picked our Estate Pinot
Noir Vineyard, received fruit from the Quenneville Vineyard, and we are
expecting Redwood Hill and Ventana Vineyards to be ready to pick in the
next two weeks.
This year's crop is rather early and quite a
bit smaller than average, but the quality of the grapes more than makes
up for the lack of quantity. It is exciting to see these outstanding
grapes come in, and it reminds us all of the mercurial nature of
winemaking.
The cellar is bustling with activity as we crush,
de-stem and ferment 40 tons of grapes for Byington's 2008 wines. We
hope that you will visit us soon to see the winemaking team in action.

2005 Messina Vineyard Merlot
Paso Robles

The 2005
Messina Merlot is a perfect example of Paso Robles Merlot-bold and full-bodied.
This wine will leave you in a state of awe. This spectacular
vineyard imparts the terroir of old-world Europe with modern
technology, resulting in a perfect compromise of the old and the new-a viticulturist's dream.
You will be amazed by the power of intense
fruit on the nose: well focused, yet continually evolving in your glass.
Flavors of cassis fruit with a slight hint of ginger and nutmeg make
Messina Merlot an age-worthy wine -8 to 10 years easily-before it
peaks. By all means, buy a case and try
some now to see how it develops throughout the years. Read the complete winemaker notes

2005 Chelle Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Paso Robles Perched on a
windy ridge on the west side of Paso Robles in the York Mountain area, Chelle
Mountain gets the full effect of the coastal winds and the wide temperature
swings those winds bring.
The
color is saturated, almost black, and
the first whiff is intensely aromatic and concentrated. The nose is green olive and black cherry with
a subtext of herbs to remind us that it is Cabernet. If you are looking to open a bottle tonight, may I
recommend a decanter, a nicely marbled steak, and a little chocolate to help
showcase this Cabernet.

2005 Cerro Prieto Cabernet Sauvignon
Paso Robles
Cerro Prieto is an amazing site with a steep
ridge running through the center of the
vineyard. The ridge creates several distinctly unique blocks within the
vineyard, all producing dramatically different flavor profiles.
The color of the Cerro Prieto is a deep, dark garnet. The nose is chocolate and cinnamon
spice with an woodsy character that provides a depth and intensity. The soft tannins will allow this
wine to age gracefully, but create such a smooth texture that it is hard to
think about cellaring. I plan to buy one
case to drink now, and another to cellar so I can enjoy the Cerro Prieto for
years to come.
