As hard to believe as it is the 2008 harvest has officially begun. We harvested a portion of our Estate Vineyard on Monday for the 2008 Saignee. When we are not in the vineyard we find ourselves bustling about the cellar preparing for all of the new fruit soon to arrive.

We recently bottled several wines, freeing up some space in the cave, including the 2006 Alliage and 2006 Messina Merlot. It will be a while before you will see these wines in your shipments, but believe me, it will be worth the wait.

This year's harvest is looking like it will be a bit smaller than most, but the relatively cool temperatures and very dry summer are promising signs of high quality fruit.
Wine Notes

2006 Viognier
California

2006 Viognier

The 2006 Viognier wine was cellared in French oak, one-third of which was new, to capitalize on its subtle, refreshing palate. The mouth-feel is lush and round, finishing with a crisp acidity to balance the richness.

Typically, we only use Viognier as one component of our Liage blend, but I felt that this wine had to be shown on its own. Enjoy the 2006 California Viognier as an aperitif while relaxing on the patio, or as a wonderful pairing with food infused with ginger. From a carrot-ginger soup to Chinese takeout, this Viognier is a perfect match.

2005 Alliage
Paso Robles
Hastings Pinot Noir

Continuing the legacy of Alliage, the 2005 blend is an age-worthy wine that still may be enjoyed early. It remains an easy drinking Bordeaux-style blend, with multiple varietals blended into the wine. See if you can spot them! Cabernet Sauvignon from several different vineyards, along with some Cabernet Franc and a splash of Merlot mingle beautifully, showcasing the "spice rack" principle of winemaking.

Enjoy this wine for years to come; it will last in bottle for at least 10 years if laid down properly, so  order more now.

If you haven't joined us for one of our Sunday Jazz afternoons or Al Fresco Thursday evenings, you should pack your picnic basket and make the drive up to see us.

The holidays are right around the corner, so mark your calendar for Byington's annual Holiday Open House, from 12-4 pm on Sunday December 7. We will feature strolling carolers, seasonal soups and wine by the glass available for purchase. Bring along a donation of some canned food goods for Martha's Kitchen and you will automatically receive an additional 10% off of your wine purchases.

Summer will soon be over, so take advantage of the wonderful weather we are having and stop by to taste the wines in your current shipment and pick up a few more bottles.

Sincerely,
