Spring has certainly sprung up here at the winery. We are currently pre-pruning the vineyard, a process which both makes the final pruning easier and delays the budding of the vines. This is really the first step in prepping the vines for our 2008 harvest.

We have some great events in the works again this year -- a great cooking class series with Hands on Gourmet, Al Fresco Thursday evenings, Sunday Jazz series, and our Spring Winemaker Dinner. Stay tuned for more details.

Wine Notes

2006 Quenneville Chardonnay
Santa Cruz Mountains
Liage

Quenneville Vineyard and Byington go back a very long way. At one time it was also known as "Dirk" Vineyard. The owners may have changed but the fruit continues to be some of our favorite.

The 2006 Quenneville Chardonnay represents the Santa Cruz Mountains perfectly. At first approach the wine reveals a nutty aroma; and the backbone of caramelized oak that leaves you longing for another taste. Cellar some for the next 5 years to see how it ages, but certainly have a glass tonight as it is very approachable right now. Buy more now.

2004 Smith-Reichel Cabernet Sauvignon
Alexander Valley
Chef Stephen

Byington has been producing the Smith- Reichel Cabernet Sauvignon for as many years as the winery has been here. The wine is strong, powerful and moving with a very bold tannin structure which will allow the Smith-Reichel to age beautifuly. When I say age I mean it, at least ten years of aging for those of you who can wait that long. This wine must be the final wine of the evening at a dinner party because it will blow the others away with its full-bodied, rich flavor. If you wish to cellar some, order more now.

Hands On Gourmet

There is still space available to train with the distinguished chefs of Hands On Gourmet in the Master the art of French cuisine on March 30. We'll handle all the clean up. The class begins at 12:00 and will last approximately an hour and a half with lunch to follow.
